New Market Fire and a few members of North Stelton Fire all participated in an extrication drill that, like always, isn't your typical door pop drill. Using the knowledge of veteran firefighters and the braun of the fresher ones, everyone was able to successfully accomplish the task at hand and walk away learing something new. The unseasonably nice weather was a plus to work in and its great to see two different departments working closly together to get the job done. Once again, special thanks to SO Rich Jones for brainstorming and thinking outside of the box for yet another well planned drill....

STATEN ISLAND ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE

As has become an annual event for New Market, we were once again invited to participate in this years Staten Island St. Patrick's Day Parade. Our hosts as always were the Brothers from FDNY L78/E155, better know as the "Hot Corner". New Market provided them breakfast foods to prepare for everyone, and the hospitality that they showed us was second to none. All of those who came out witnessed an amazing group of men and women who define comradery. Once breakfast was complete we went to pay a visit to a retired FDNY member who opened his house to us and gave us lunch. Afterwards, we made our way to the parade staging area. There we were last in the lineup until FDNY's new Rescue 5 came up behind us. A Very nice sight to say the least since New Market's R-1 was just as big and both together made a lasting impression. Also, while waiting for the parade to kick off, 2 car pools of VIP's came up quickly upon us. the first being Sen.Charles Schumer, who met with the crowd and then Mayor Bloomberg himself. Mayor Bloomburg was gracious enough to have a few words with Chief Lemire. Once the parade kicked off, we saw well over one hundred thousand spectators who cheered everyone one. A few "New Market???" comments were made, but afterwards we were acknowledged as having one of the best pieces of equipment in the parade, even at 21 years old. After the parade, the crew spent time talking with the residents and other FF's and finished off the nite with some truely "official" Staten Island pizza. A special thanks to Patty Rourke who again made this all possible and to the Board of Fire Commissioners who once again allowed us to participate with our neighboring state....

An unusually early Nor’easter winter storm plummeted the area with a few inches of wet heavy snow that kept New Market Fire busy throughout the duration of the storm and its aftermath. Heavy tree branches and wires broke loose and caused disruption of electric, phone and cable service for a number of residents. Included, was a primary electrical line that fell across the street from Station 1 at Hamilton Blvd. With at least 10kv of electricity, the line has been arcing and creating quite a sight for motorists who have been detoured around the area by Fire and Police units. S. Washington Ave remains closed at this time between Woodrow Ave and Evans Ave and is expected to remain closed until PSE&G can secure the line and make repairs to the roadway.
